Common Misconceptions About Indian Food

There are a lot of misconceptions out there about Indian food! We know what you’re thinking: how could something so delicious be so misunderstood? Well, don’t worry! In today’s blog, we’re busting some common misconceptions and myths about Indian food and laying down the truth. If this blog gets your tummy rumbling for a tasty meal, you know what to do. Just give us a call and order some food for pick-up, or come on by for a quick lunch or a sit-down meal any time!

“Indian food is too hot and too spicy.”

We say it all the time here at Charcoal Chicken, spicy does not mean hot. There are spices that add heat to a dish, but there are also spices that simply add a rich depth of flavor. Many Indian dishes are not “spicy” at all, but are instead savory or even sweet. At Charcoal Chicken, we make everything fresh to order, so if you are worried about a dish being too hot, simply ask us to make it “mild” and we’ll use less of the hot spices. If you’re looking for a meal that is naturally mild, try our butter chicken!

“Indian food doesn’t cater to a vegetarian diet.”

We actually just wrote an entire blog about how well Indian food fits into a vegetarian lifestyle. We have numerous dishes that sub out meat in favor of potatoes, cheese, or lentils, meaning you get the same fresh, flavorful meals minus the meat.

“Indian food is unhealthy.”

Just like any other cuisine, there are healthy and not-so-healthy options. That said, in general Indian food is a healthy option. This is especially true when compared to other take-away options if you are in need of a fast and easy dinner. Our food is made with fresh vegetables and packed with nutrients. To make your meal healthier, choose roti instead of naan and substitute a salad bed instead of rice.

“All Indian food is the same.”

Many people who have not experienced a lot of Indian food think that curry is the only type of Indian food. This is often because curry is the most familiar Indian cuisine in the Western world. We encourage you to branch out and try some things you’ve never had (or maybe never even heard of) before! If you’re unsure of what’s what, check out our blog about Indian and Pakistani food lingo that explains some of the non-English words on our menu.

“There’s no good Indian Food near me!”

If you live anywhere near Washington D.C. or in Northern Virginia, you’re wrong! Charcoal Chicken offers some of the best Indian food in the region (just check out our reviews!) and we’d be happy to prove that to you.
